4LEAPS presents four Yogyakarta-based artists, all of them are West Sumatrans completing their formal art education at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts in Yogyakarta (ISI Yogyakarta).
Like West Sumatran (Minang) artists in general, well known in the developing Indonesian contemporary art for their good artistic sensibility, these four distinctively offer their respective perspectives.
If observant enough, one will notice in the exhibition space a thin line somewhat separating four types of works by the four artists, Gusmen, Saftari, Yon Indra, and Zulkarnaini, into two groups.
The first group includes Yon Indra’s and Zulkarnaini’s that are measured, geometric, non-narrative and non-associative in character. The second group consists of works that are ‘measured’ (in terms of scale manipulation), mimetic, narrative and associative, by Gusmen and Saftari.
The four types of works of the two different characters meet in one and the same field of issue, i.e., sensibility. I shall call these four kinds of works an intact manifestation of sensible insights.
