it
an approach to Indonesian contemporary art
susanna perini

“Within the current developments in thinking relating to art theories, there are efforts being made to explore what is being called cross-cultural aesthetics.
These efforts are focused on the belief that works of art are cultural texts existing within any culture to be found anywhere. Based on this perception, cross- cultural aesthetics tries to connect the theories of art that have traditionally developed in Europe and in America (the culture of the West) with the expression of visual art within the framework of the “culture of the other” …”
- Jim Supangkat (Art With An Accent, CP Open Biennale 2003)

This show includes pieces that are collection of the gallery, and exists from the desire to present the works of Indonesian artists whom I met during my recent visits to Jogjakarta. Such meetings have contributed to deepen my interest in contemporary Indonesian art.

Within an international contest, Biasa art space wishes to provide a venue for the presentation of Indonesian art where it will be possible to stimulate a debate and an understanding over the idea of cross-cultural aesthetics.

This is the third episode at Biasa that marks the beginning of an exploration into the relationship between the relativity of regional culture and universalism.

Ultimately, through this journey I wish to pursue the discovery of an imaginary space between two opposites... the third force that catalyses their interaction and partnership of two elements. I suspect that Indonesian Visual Art expresses concepts about this force.
